In a dark, dark forrest, there was a dark, dark cave, and in that dark, dark cave there was.... A BAT! The children have begun telling scary stories in group time... we collaborate on the characters and events we want in our story and then blend them together to make one very interestingly scary story...
On Friday we had... a cave, a bat, a monster, a grave a graveyard, monster, witch, vampire and a dragon
The lights are turned out, there is a storm the mood is set... There are a lot of wide eyes and nervous giggles. This story telling experience is giving children an opportunity to make meaning using language and to develop skills in creating, structuring and communicating a story. they are learning what elements need to be present in a scary story; creatures of myth and imagination, a scary feeling communicated through hushed tones and sound effects...
Today Max supported our story telling experience and the children told Max what characters and events they would like in the story...
Asher: "A Ghost Skeleton went to find the gold"
Conan: "Where the wild animal dinosaurs are"
Charlotte: "A shark that eats the monsters"
The children are incresing in confidence and are very involved in this story telling process. They are conveying and constructing messages with purpose building on literacies of the home/family and broader community. We have many families who engage their children in oral story telling each night before bed.
